Narrative:
On 24 January 1942 1st Lt Kenneth Wayne Sprankle of 6th PS /18th PG took off from Wheeler Field, Oahu, Territory of Hawaai for a patrol. He was flying over Koolau Range, Oahu, when his P-40B 41-13297 spun in. The pilot apparently failed to recover from inverted spin aircraft and was killed when the fighter crashed into the range at about 14:20 hrs. The accident report indicates that the parachute was not used and that no failure of material or equipment was involved.

The aircraft (c/n 16073) survived Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941 as it was in maintenance hangar undergoing repair. The wreck was recovered between 1985 and 1989 and restored by Curtiss Wright Historical Association, using parts from 39-285 and 39-287. It was then sold to The Fighter Collection, Duxford, England and registered as G-CDWH. It was delivered to Duxford on July 2007, painted in 1941 "Pearl Harbor" color scheme with code 284.
