Narrative:On March 6, 1943, a Lockheed F-4 (photo-recon version of the P-38 Lightning), serial number 41-2212, of 7th PRS, 2nd PRG, developed trouble in the right engine upon takeoff from Colorado Springs. Declaring an emergency, the pilot, 2nd Lt. James R. Brooks, Jr., attempted to return to the field. He was unable to maintain his altitude and lacked about 25’ in elevation to belly land on the top of a rise. Instead, the crippled aircraft struck below the crest, throwing the pilot from the aircraft, killing him.
