Narrative:
Belly landing. The Thunderbolt was the last aircraft in a 6-ship formation of P-47s flying as part of the dedication ceremony of the Norfolk Nebraska Airport. As each Thunderbolt initiated a steep turn remaining in formation for landing, aircraft “83”, being last in the pattern, was too low as it initiated its final bank and clipped a large bundle of power lines, stripping it of its engine. The pilot was able to successfully land the craft wheels up on its belly, breaking both legs in the process.
