Narrative:
Spitfire L1027 was built to contract 527113/36 by Vickers Armstrong's (Supermarine) Ltd at Woolston
First flew 22nd June 1939. Fitted out at 20MU 29th June 1939 then sent to 19 Squadron on the 8th October 1939. Then two month later to 602 Squadron on the 21st December 1939. L1027 was shot down by a Messerschmitt Bf110 at 16.14hrs on the 11th September 1940. The pilot, P/O Rose managed to crash land but was injured.
Originally from Elswick in the north east of England, Rose moved south to join the RAFVR in March 1939, called up at the outbreak of war he was commissioned in June 1940 joining No.602 Sqn in June 1940 flying Spitfires and serving with the unit throughout the Battle of Britain, claiming three victories. Squadron Leader Nigel Rose was then posted to 54 Sqn at Hornchurch in September 1941 before becoming an instructor in 1942, and also serving in the Middle East. Afterwards he moved to No.54 Sqn before taking on positions in training units. He died on 10th September 2017 aged 99.
L1027 was repaired and sent to 53 OTU, RAF Llandow.
28th September 1941 she was Written off (damaged beyond repair) when the pilot stalled the aircraft which was too high on landing and the undercarriage collapsed. Damage assessed as Cat. E and aircraft SOC 4/10/41
