De Havilland DH.82A Tiger Moth MSN 82206 (Gipsy Major #81096): Taken on charge as N6968 by 504 (County of Nottingham) Squadron, RAF Hucknall, Nottinghamshire 13.7.39; to RAF Digby, Scopwick, Lincolnshire 8.39. To 616 (South Yorkshire) Squadron, RAF Doncaster, South Yorkshire 1.9.39; to RAF Leconfield 10.39. To 24 MU Ternhill 18.1.40. To 6 EFTS Sywell, Northamptonshire 25.9.40. Also operated out of RAF Denton RLG (Relief Landing Ground)
Ten aircrew were killed when Wellington Ic X9799 of 15 OTU (based at RAF Harwell, Oxfordshire), on a cross- country night training flight, collided with Tiger Moth N6968 of 6EFTS (based at Denton), between 800-1000 feet amsl at approximately 23:00hrs. The aircraft crashed north east of Piddington Station, near Denton, Northants, and was completely burnt out. All crew in both aircraft were killed - eight in the Wellington and two in the Tiger Moth
The Tiger Moth’s occupants were:
Instructor (90507) F/Lt Edward Murray Frisby, (pilot) RAFVR, of Cropston, Leicestershire - buried at St Cuthbert Churchyard, Great Glen, Leicestershire.
Pupil Pilot (1443637) LAC David Quaife May, (pilot) RAFVR, of St Albans, Hertfordshire - buried at Saints Peter & Paul Churchyard, Sywell, Northamptonshire.
RAF Denton was a grass airstrip RLG (Relief Landing Ground) for RAF Sywell, located 5 nautical miles South East of Northampton, West-South-West of Denton village and South East of Brafield on the Green..
The reported crash location of Piddington Station was a railway station on the former Bedford to Northampton Line. Despite its name, the station was located close to the village of Horton in Northamptonshire, approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) from the village of Piddington. The line and station were opened in 1872 and operated by the Midland Railway which became part of the London Midland and Scottish Railway in 1923. The line closed to passengers in 1962
