A Piper PA-38-112 Tomahawk suffered minor damage after an emergency landing in a field of Manor Farm, North Gower, near Swansea Airport (SWS/EGFH). The aircraft was heading for Haverfordwest and rough running/engine failure happened at 600 feet so the pilot and instructor made for a field towards North Gower. The student was on his first Dual cross country flight. The instructor and student pilot escaped unhurt. According to the following extract from the final AAIB report into the accident:
"At approximately 400 feet agl, after taking off from Swansea Airport on a training flight, the instructor heard a loud bang followed by severe airframe vibration and a significant reduction in engine power. He elected to make an immediate forced landing in a field. The aircraft touched down without incident, but the instructor was unable to stop the aircraft before it hit the boundary hedge. Both the instructor and student were uninjured and able to evacuate the aircraft unaided. Examination of the engine identified that a spark plug had failed and released from one of the cylinder heads".
A Chivenor-based Sea King was attending an incident nearby at Worms Head on the Gower Peninsula, and also attended this incident - then gave both pilot and instructor a lift back to Swansea!
Damage sustained to airframe: Fuselage and rudder damaged. This seems to have been enough to render the airframe as "damaged beyond economic repair", and the registration G-BSOT was cancelled by the CAA on 6/7/2012 (five months later...) as "destroyed"
