On December 24 1912 the sports plane took off for Edinburgh from the London area. It was the first time someone has attempted to fly non stop from England's capital to Scotland's capital (At the time). Flying the Martin-Handasyde Monoplane was Mr Edward Petre, aged 26, from Norfolk, took off from Brooklands Aerodrome at 09.10 hours.
During the flight the aircraft entered heavy winds flying over North Yorkshire. The winds forced him into Cleveland Hills along the coastline. He tried to land on the beach. Mr Edward landed but the strong winds forced the aircraft back into the air. Then a view seconds later the aircraft lost height to 400 feet, and then rose again, it's wings then collapsed. Control of the aircraft at this point was lost and started slipped sideways. The aircraft crashed into ground at a field near Marske-by-the-Sea. The pilot Mr Edward Petre died in the crash.
According to a contemporary report in Flight magazine (4 January 1913 page 11 - see link #2):
"Fatal Accident to Mr, Edward Petre
The news of the sad accident at Marske-on-Sea on Christmas Eve was received at the Royal Aero Club with great sorrow. The official representative of the Club in Yorkshire, Mr. Frederic Strickland, of Malton, immediately proceeded to the scene of the accident.
Before his arrival, however, the wrecked aircraft had been removed by the police irom the field where it fell, to a stable, and very little, if any, information could be obtained from an examination of it there. On Friday, December 27th, 1912, Mr. G. B. Cockburn and Mr. H. E. Perrin, the Secretary, joined Mr. Strickland at Marske-on-Sea and examined a number of eye-witnesses of the accident. Their report was submitted to the Accidents Committee at its meeting on Wednesday, the 1st inst."
Two days after the accident, it made the front page of the Northern Echo. “The tragedy cast quite a gloom over the sequestered village of Marske where arrangements for the Yuletide festivities had almost been completed,” we reported.
By that evening, the victim’s family had arrived from Essex and were put up by the local postmaster. On Boxing Day at 10.30am the inquest was held in Marske Literary Institute, the following morning Petre’s family returned south by train with his coffin and on December 28 1912 his funeral was held at Ingatestone.
