At the time of the crash, G-KATY (call sign BOXER 3) was photographing traffic in the Ringwood area on market day. During the third or fourth orbit the aircraft was seen to descend from about 800 feet to between 150 and 100 feet, and then to enter a steep, but apparently controlled, turn to the right. A few seconds later the bank angle suddenly increased to about 90 degrees and the aircraft spiralled steeply into a wood and a post crash fire developed.

The two members of the Hampshire Constabulary on-board (a PPL pilot and photographer) died on impact.

AAIB were not able to determine the cause of the initial or subsequent descents with certainty. They indicate that it is most likely that the pilot was forced to descend by a partial or transient power loss, possibly due to mishandling of the fuel tank selector. They suggest the spiral may have been initiated by either the passenger grasping at the controls or (less likely) a stall while turning tightly to the most favourable emergency landing site.

Four recommendations were raised.

The aircraft was being evaluated as a possible cheaper alternative to a Police Helicopter and two further Opticas were subsequently operated before a BN2 was purchased.

G-KATY was ex-G-BLFD (re-registered on 2/4/1985) and was owned by Christopher Foyle Aviation (Leasing) Company t/a Foyle Air, from whom the Hampshire Police had leased it. Registration G-KATY cancelled by the CAA as aircraft "destroyed" 22/1/1987
