Narrative:Gloster Meteor VZ498: Written off (destroyed) 16 February 1951. The aircraft's compass failed in flight, and, despite being given homing bearings by ATC (Air Traffic Control) the aircraft ran out of fuel before it could reach base (presumed to be RAF Acklington, Northumberland). The pilot attempted a forced landing but the aircraft crashed at Thropton Farm near Whittingham, Northumberland, after hitting a tree and somersaulting 400-yards. The pilot was killed.
Crew of Meteor VZ498:
Pilot-Officer Geoffrey John ADAMS, RAF (pilot) - killed on active service 16/2/1951
The reported crash site of Whittingham is a village and civil parish in Northumberland, England. It is situated on the banks of the River Aln, roughly 4.5 miles (7 km) east of its source at Alnham and 7.3 miles (12 km) west of Alnwick. RAF Acklington, which is the presumed destination of Meteor VZ498, is approximately 16 miles to the south east
