Narrative:Handley Page Halifax C.Mk VIII G-AHZN: Ex-RAF PP244, first civil registered 17 July 1946. Written off (destroyed) when belly landed 100 yards offshore off the seafront at Knokke-le-Zoute, West Flanders, Belgium 26 September 1946 following fuel shortage due to faulty navigation.
The captain was a Squadron Leader G Coleman, who got into difficulties on a flight from Bergamo Airport, Milan, Italy, to London Heathrow. Unable to receive any Radio Navigation Directional Bearings he decided to ditch in the sea. The crew of 3 managed to swim ashore, but the Norwegian passenger perished. The cargo was crates of grapes from Italy.
Registration G-AHZN officially cancelled by Secretary of State Air Ministry on 1 January 1947, due to "destruction or permanent withdrawl from use of aircraft"
It should be noted that both official Air Ministry files into the accident, held at the National Archives, are closed, and therefore unavailable for 75 years. File BT 217/881 carries the note "Closed Or Retained Document. Closed For 75 years. LCI 56 - Series containing both closure and accelerated opening instruments. Decision date 08 August 1980. File opening date 01 January 2022". File BT 217/883 carries the same note, but with a date of 01 January 2023 before it can be declassified
