Narrative:
Handley Page Hampden Mk.I X3154 (ZN-A) of 106 Sqaudron, RAF Finningley. Written off (destroyed) 21/12/1940. The Hampden had taken off from RAF Finningley on a night navigation exercise. The aircraft crashed at Lords Seat, on Rushup Edge, 2 miles West of Castleton, near Chapel-en-le-Frith, Peak District, Derbyshire at around 20:15.

The official inquiry determined that the aircraft was 50 miles west of its intended track and was flying too low. A contributory factor may also have been due to poor definition between the low cloud and the snow-covered ground. All four crew on board killed:

83259 Pilot Officer Michael Hubbard (pilot, aged 20) (killed),
590585 Sgt Kenneth Walsingham Boyd Perkins (pilot, aged 24) (killed),
553939 Sgt Derrick Joseph Davey (wireless operator/air gunner, aged 19) (killed),
648240 Sgt David William Smith (wireless operator/air gunner, aged 18) (killed)
