Narrative:Hawker Hurricane Mk.I P3450 (SD-N) 501 (County of Gloucester) Squadron: Written off (presumed destroyed) when lost (Failed To Return) from a Combat Air Patrol over Le Mans, France. Pilot killed. According to the official Air Ministry file into the incident (File AIR 81/785): "Pilot Officer A J Claydon: report of death; Hurricane crashed near Rouen, France, 5 June 1940"
Airborne from RAF Tangmere, Chichester, West Sussex for a combat air patrol over Le Mans, France. Shot down and killed in action in Hurricane P3450/SD-N, near Le Mans, and was buried at Rouen next day. Hurricane P3450 was delivered to 501 Squadron on 28 May 1940, and, according to the 501 (County of Gloucester) Squadron ORB (Operations Record Book - Air Ministry Form 540) the only Hurricane ever flown by P/O Anthony J Claydon. It was formally Struck off Charge on 21 June 1940.
