A Piper PA-44-180 Seminole crashed under unknown circumstances in a field at Els Emprius, near Perpignan at night and was only discovered at 07:40 in the morning.

The sole occupant was killed and the aircraft destroyed.

According to a source close to the investigation, the impact was violent. The aircraft would have completely disintegrated. The accident went unnoticed, and the alert was not given until daybreak.

The plane was allegedly stolen overnight by a young italian guy who passed through civil defense premises. Traces of break-in were reportedly observed. The flight departed unnoticed: the control tower was unoccupied overnight.

Yuri Martelli was a young Italian of Brazilian origin, living in Massa, a seaside town in Tuscany. Studying in a hotel school, the young man had been missing for twenty days. His parents were summoned by the gendarmes in France and officially recognized the victim, notably thanks to his clothes.

The young man had no aviation certificate and had never flown any aircraft. But he had a passion for aviation and trained in flight simulators.
