A Romanian Air Force IAR 330L Puma, operated by Esc 572 Elicoptere, took off from Mihail Kogălniceanu Airport's 57th Air Base sector (CND/LRCK) for a Search And Rescue mission after a MIG-21MF LanceR C fighter jet went missing. The helicopter crashed near Gura Dobrogei in a field due to icing on the main rotor blades.
7 soldiers lost their lives. In addition to the five crew members initially notified, two Romanian naval rescue workers were also on board. The pilot of the MIG-21MF Lancer C was killed in the accident.
