On 28 February 2022, a Sukhoi Su-27S (bort 11 Blue s/n 36911014818) of the 831st Tactical Aviation Brigade of the Ukrainian Air Force was shot down in unknown circumstances in the vicinity of Kropyvnytskyi, Kropyvnytskyi Raion, Kirovohrad Oblast.
On the same day, Ukrainian sources reported that MiG-29 pilot Senior Lieutenant Andriy Andriyovych Gerus had shot down a Russian Il-76 airlifter over Kropyvnytskyi. However, no evidence of a large IL-76 aircraft was been found in the surrounding area. As a result, there is some speculation that the aircraft shot down in this event was the Su-27 fighter piloted by Mayor Chobanu, with the heavy combat loaded fighter being misidentified.
Major Cioban was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine. In Late August 2023, the loss of the pilot and aircraft were acknowledged on the official Facebook page of the 831st Tactical Aviation Brigade of the Ukrainian Air Force, with a "piano burning" ceremony taking place. Historically, this has been a tradition practiced by the British Royal Air Force.
