Narrative:On 26 February 2022, a Ukrainian Air Force Sukhoi Su-25M1 from the 299th Tactical Aviation Brigade was shot down by forces of the Russian Federation near Molodizhne in Kherson Oblast during the Battle of Kherson. The pilot, Starshyy Leytenant Andrey Olegovich Maksimov was able to eject and was taken prisoner by advancing Russian forces. The aircraft crashed near a cloverleaf junction connecting the Antonovka Road Bridge and the M-14 highway to the P-47 highway. The bridge is a key position in the region as it is one of only two road crossings of the west and east banks of the Dnieper river, with the other being the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Dam. The aircraft had been carrying out a mission to strafe the Antonovka Road Bridge with unguided rockets in the face of the advancing southern group of Russian forces.
Russian Airborne Forces (VDV) took responsibility for the downing of the aircraft, announcing that the aircraft was downed by the 3rd Anti-aircraft Missile Regiment, 7th Guards Mountain Air Assault Division using a 9K333 Verba man-portable air defence system. The aircraft was hit while strafing the connecting road between Molodizhne and Antonovka, travelling for 1km before crashing near the cloverleaf junction. Starshyy Leytenant Maksimov ejected and landed 200-300m from the crash site. After the site was secured by VDV forces, Starshyy Leytenant Andrey Maksimov was captured and transferred to the units regimental command post, where he received medical care. Maksimov was later returned to Ukraine in a POW exchange.
In June 2022, the burnt out and destroyed wreckage of the aircraft was filmed by American vlogger Patrick Lancaster, positively identifying the aircraft as bort no. 49 Blue. From the wreckage it appears that the aircraft hit the ground at a steep angle of attack, resulting in a relatively small debris trail. The crash site is also visible in contemporary satellite imagery.
