Narrative:
Written off 29.12.83: After a cross-country flight, the pilot was attempting to land G-AYPP at a Farm Airstrip at Stoke St. Mary, Somerset. The strip featured a steep uphill slope, then levelled off, and ended sloping slightly downhill.

The Piper landed further down the airstrip than the pilot intended, so he decided to discontinue the landing, and take off again. As he applied power, the engine faltered and failed to delivered the required full take-off power. However, by this point the aircraft had slowed so that there was insufficient airspeed to lift off again. The pilot then decided to abort the takeoff and attempt a landing anyway.

The problem was, by this point, there was also insufficient space left at the end of the airstrip to prevent the Piper from crashing into the boundary hedge. In the impact, damage was thus sustained to the engine and propeller, the main undercarriage gear collapsed, the fuselage was distorted, and the starboard wing struts were destroyed.

All of the above damage was sufficient for G-AYPP to have its registration cancelled as "W.F.U" ("Withdrawn From Use") seven months later, on 30.7.84
