Narrative:
The head of maintenance checked the engine, its controls, and other systems, then started the engine normally. The tail boom and its components were sent to Robinson Helicopters for a major overhaul. The pilot informed the Quebec City (CYQB) flight information centre (FIC) that, because of an engine failure, he had conducted a forced landing in a field near Mascouche. There were no deaths or injuries., 2006-08-02 - Update #2: Category changed from "incident" to "accident"., 2006-08-02 - Update #1: Update #1: Inserted TSB investigation class and number. According to TSB report #A06Q0077: Robinson R22 Beta C-GJZH was on a training flight with a student and an instructor. After more than 45 minutes of hovering training, the helicopter ascended. About 30 seconds later, when the helicopter was at about 1,000 feet agl, the engine (Lycoming O-320) power decreased considerably. The instructor immediately took the controls and conducted an autorotation. The helicopter landed on soft ground, and the tail rotor hit the ground. There was significant damage to the helicopter's tail boom and tail rotor. The poccupants were not injured. An inspection of the engine and the controls did not find any malfunctions. Weather conditions were suitable for visual flight, with no precipitation. The temperature at 12:00 p.m. was 9.4 degrees Celsius and the dew point was 0.0 degrees Celsius.
