Narrative:On December 17, 2023, about 1414 central standard time, a Beech B36TC, N70SL, was involved in an accident near Burnet, Texas. The pilot and passenger received serious injuries. The airplane was destroyed. The airplane was operated under Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations as a Part 91 personal flight.
A witness stated that he saw the airplane kicking black smoke from the exhaust intermittently after it rotated during takeoff, after which it climbed out slowly. A second witness saw the airplane fly southbound at an estimated altitude of 100 – 150 ft above ground level and was having difficulty gaining altitude. The airplane’s landing gear was retracted, the wing flaps were retracted, and the propeller was turning. The airplane lost altitude and descended behind a hill.
The pilot stated that immediately after takeoff the engine began to surge. About 200-300 ft above ground level the airplane experienced a total loss of engine power. The pilot attempted a forced landing to a road and did not attempt to return the airport. During the forced landing, the airplane struck powerlines and a car. The occupant of the car was uninjured. The airplane came to rest in a field about 0.5 miles south of the departure airport and was destroyed by fire.
The airplane wreckage was retained for further examination.
