Narrative:
On February 10, 2024, about 1430 mountain standard time, a Piper PA-32R-301T, N989SR, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Spanish Fork, Utah. The pilot and passenger sustained minor injuries. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight.

The pilot reported that while in the airport’s traffic pattern for runway 30, Spanish Fork Municipal Airport (SPK), Spanish Fork, Utah, he conducted the before landing checklist, switched fuel tanks, and turned on the electric fuel pump. While on the left downwind leg for runway 30, he conducted the landing check list and switched to the fullest fuel tank. While abeam the runway threshold, the engine experienced a partial loss of engine power. The pilot attempted to troubleshoot by switching the fuel selector lever to the opposite fuel tank and cycled the electric fuel pump off and back on. Despite his attempts to troubleshoot, the engine lost all power.

The pilot turned left toward the runway and transmitted a mayday call on the airport’s common traffic advisory frequency (CTAF). He realized that he was unable to make it to the runway and initiated a forced landing to an open field. During the landing sequence, the airplane struck power lines and subsequently impacted terrain before it came to rest upright.

Postaccident examination of the airplane revealed that the fuselage and both wings were substantially damaged. The wreckage was recovered for further examination.
