Narrative:On April 29, 2024, about 1320 central daylight time, a Baby Great Lakes experimental amateurbuilt airplane, N822CH, was destroyed when it was involved in an accident near Castroville, Texas. The pilot sustained serious injuries. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight.
According to witnesses who briefly spoke to the pilot after the accident in the airport terminal building, the pilot was landing on a grass runway which was located between a paved runway and taxiway at the Castroville Municipal Airport. The pilot stated that during the landing, it felt like the airplane impacted a pothole, and he lost control. The airplane came to rest upright, and a postimpact fire ensued. The pilot was able to self-extricate and walk to the airport terminal building. The witnesses stated the pilot had sustained multiple burns, and they called for emergency assistance.
Postaccident examination of the airplane revealed the right main landing gear wheel strut assembly had fractured near the wheel attachment point. The fracture surface showed evidence of rust, and the separated tube assembly was retained for further examination. The composite structure fuel tank, which was located between the instrument panel and firewall, sustained thermal damage and contained a puncture consistent with a support member of the landing gear assembly.
