Written off (destroyed) when ditched off Bergsplas, near Rotterdam, Nertherlands 28.6.65 after running out of fuel during a banner-towing sortie; pilot J Smit survived. According to a rough translartion from Dutch into English of the original accident report (see link #9 for the original Dutch text):

"28.06.1965 PH-UFH De Havilland DH.82A Tiger Moth 84631
Bergse Plas

The pilot put a little too much faith in his fuel gauge; so there was too little fuel! After the advertising flight, the engine stopped prematurely and after dropping the tow he looked for a suitable emergency landing site.

However, it turned out none was available, and, at his wits' end, he put the Tiger Moth 'on the ground' into the waters of the Bergse Voor Plas, in about two meters deep of water.

Before the aircraft had sunk completely, he was able to transfer into a directly alongside to a boat that came to his aid, so that he didn't even get wet feet!"

Dutch registration PH-UFH cancelled 28.11.65 as "withdrawn from use". The aircraft was subsequently scrapped, due to prolonged immersion in salt water.

The Bergse Plassen are two peat lakes located between the northern Rotterdam suburbs of Schiebroek and Hillegersberg. They are each approximately 46 hectares in size and can be reached by boat from the Rotte via the Berg en Broeksche Verlaat .
