Narrative:
de Havilland DH.82A Tiger Moth MSN 85838; Taken on charge by the RAF as DE978, nominally at 15 MU RAF Wroughton, Wiltshire 6.8.42. However, placed into long-term storage in ‘purgatory’ in the Oxfordshire area; returned to Morris Motors, Cowley, Oxford for erection 10.2.44. To 38 MU RAF Llandow, Glamorgan 25.2.44. To 25 [P] EFTS RAF Hucknall, Nottinghamshire 30.6.44 coded ‘71’. To 16 [P] SFTS RAF Hucknall, Nottinghamshire 29.11.45. To 16 EFTS RAF Burnaston, Derbyshire 11.2.46. To Nottingham UAS (University Air Sqaudron) [attached to 16 EFTS at RAF Burnaston] 23.4.47 coded “FLL-B”. To 16 RFS RAF Burnaston, Derbyshire 26.6.47; operated by Nottingham UAS coded “RUN-B”. To 5 RFS RAF Castle Bromwich, Warwickshire 27.6.51 [retained by Nottingham UAS]. To 63 Group Comm Flight, RAF Hawarden, Flintshire 25.2.53. To 9 MU RAF Cosford, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire 3.12.53 for long-term storage pending disposal.

Struck off charge as Cat.5(c) when sold as parts 1.6.54 to Skylines Ltd. Roaded from RAF Burnaston, Derbyshire to Thruxton early in 1957. UK civil registered G-APAI (C of R R5929/1) 3.4.57 to The Wiltshire School of Flying Ltd, Thruxton. Modified to Thruxton Jackaroo (change of type notified on 8.7.57) and C of A issued 22.1.58. C of R No changed to R6066/1 9.7.58. Badly damaged when engine cut on take-off Thruxton 8.8.60; repaired.

Damaged in heavy landing Chilbolton Airfield, Chilbolton, Stonefield Park Lane, Stockbridge, Hampshire 8.4.64.

Registration G-APAI cancelled 1.3.65. Nevertheless, sold on and re-registered (C of R R6066/2) on 9.3.65 to Malcolm Francis Ogilvie-Forbes (Managing Director of the Wiltshire School of Flying), Hurstbourne Tarrant, Andover, Hampshire - presumably for rebuild. No rebuild progressed, and instead broken up for spares at Thruxton in 1965-66. Registration cancelled 3.3.69 by the CAA as "permanently withdrawn from use"
