Narrative:A-6E Intruder BuNo. 155586/NH-500 of VA-95, US Navy. Damaged beyond repair February 15, 1995 by fire on the deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72). The aircraft was on the catapult of the carrier, preparing to launch at the time.
The ship was talking part in a Joint Task Force Exercise (JTFEx) in southern Californian waters from 13 to 24 February 1994.
Planners designed the JTFEx to enable all the commands of the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Battle Group to train together a final time—while observers graded the participants—prior to deployment. Aircraft No. 500, an A-6E Intruder (BuNo 155586) of VA-95, caught fire while at tension on one of the catapults on 15 February. The crew escaped from the conflagration unharmed
One flight deck crewman was injured when the canopy was jettisoned while attempting to rescue the crew. He was flown off to a local San Diego Hospital.
