Narrative:On 2 May 1944 Capt Roy M Scrutchfield of 55th FS, 20th FG, took his Crew chief up in a cleared out space behind the cockpit of his P-38J 42-67823 on a test flight from Wittering to demonstrate the technique of switching off the engines and restarting them in flight. The starboard engine was feathered for a restart test, but the engine failed to restart in flight and the drag from the propeller was more than the other engine could compensate for. The pilot chose to force-land wheels-up at North Field Farm, 1 mile north of Stamford. The aircraft sustained unrepairable damage in the landing though neither man was injured.
