Narrative:
This Robinson was imported via Skysales Aviation (NZ) Ltd and registered to them on 24-06-2004 for delivery to Eddie Schenk down Temuka way from 26-07-2004. It was sold on to the S Spencer-Bower Family Trust on 10-06-2009 and transferred to Wanaka Helicpters Ltd on 01-03-2010.

The Robinson R22 was flying from Wanaka to Haast and back on a training flight. It was due back at Wanaka at 1:00 p.m. but did not arrive, and SAR action was initiated at 3:00 p.m. A faint electronic locator beacon signal was detected. The missing helicopter was found at about 9:00 a.m. on Thursday 28 April. Both occupants were found dead at the site of the crash. Contemporary press reports named the two fatalities as Instructor Graham Alan Stott, 31, and student Marcus Hoogvliet, 21,

The helicopter broke up in flight after the main rotor blades deviating from their normal operating plane of rotation and striking the tail boom. This was likely to have been caused by one or a combination of the following:
- severe or extreme turbulence buffeting the helicopter
- the main rotor speed being allowed to drop below its lower limit
- the pilots making large and abrupt movements of the controls.

TAIC determined that the helicopter had been operating in a high-risk situation at the time due to the combination of: operation at an altitude of about 5,500 feet, close to its maximum permissible weight and entering an area of moderate to extreme turbulence.
