Narrative:c/no.6296: CofA 5050 issued 2.9.35 to Asiatic Petroleum Co; delivered ex Croydon to Rotterdam 31.8.35. Registered PH-AKU [CofR 174] 4.9.35 to Koninklijke NederlandschIndische Luchtvaart Maatschappij [KNILM], for survey work in Dutch New Guinea on behalf of Asiatic Petroleum (Royal Dutch/Shell).
Re-registered in Dutch East Indies as PK-AKU 24.1.36 to KNILM; operated by Nederlandse Nieuw Guinea Petroleum Maatschappij (NNGPM).
On 16.8.38, while on an aerial mapping mission to Celebes, Dutch Indies, PK-AKU suffered from an engine failure. Despite the fact that pilot Fritz and photographer van der Putten threw everything out of the plane that was not absolutely essential for flight, the Rapide kept losing altitude. It forced the pilot to land on a beach near Ketapangdaja on Madura Island. In this landing accident the aircraft’s wings broke off, and during later inspection at Surabaja, PK-AKU was declared written off.
