Narrative:
While on a reconnaissance flight off the German coast, the aircraft was shot down by the pilot of a German Messerschmitt Bf.109 and crashed off Wangerooge Island, Lower Saxony, while attempting an emergency landing in the mainland. All six crew members were killed.

Aircraft was one of 12 that took off with only 6nr returning to base safely.

Note, however, that the official Air Ministry File (AIR 81/58) states that "Wellington N2956 failed to return from an operational flight,believed to have been hit by anti-aircraft fire, 14 December 1939". That is, shot down by AA fire and not by enemy aircraft.
