Narrative:A bird strike was to blame for a jet overrunning a runway during an aborted takeoff at Durham Tees Valley Airport, the plane's owners have said.
The incident led to emergency services being scrambled, although none of the three people on board the Falcon 20 were injured. It was operated by Cobham Aviation Services, an international firm whose activities include training military personnel.
A spokesman for the firm said: "An aircraft operated by Cobham Aviation Services was involved in an incident at Durham Tees Valley Airport today. A bird strike was reported resulting in an aborted takeoff and the aircraft overran the end of the runway.
"The three crew on board were uninjured and the aircraft has sustained some damage. Cobham Aviation Services has launched an internal investigation into the incident and are fully co-operating with the airport and with the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) who will also conduct an investigation."
The airport, near Darlington, continued to operate as normal after the incident, a spokesman said.
"Emergency services have been involved in dealing with an incident at Durham Tees Valley airport this morning," he said. "There are not believed to be any injuries and the airport is continuing to operate as normal."
The aircraft was said to have suffered minor damage, though it was still off the 05 end of the runway and may have to be lifted out tomorrow (August 9th). The airport is operating with a reduced runway length. Airport re-opened 12:30. During the recovery operation, the aircraft's registration was "censored" by the application of a black plastic sheet taped to the fin, as was the words "Cobham" (the aircraft's operator). Aircraft was recovered and returned to the hangar for damage inspection and accident investigation procedures to begin
