Narrative:
Boulton Paul Defiant Mk.I N1762, 288 Squadron RAF: Written off (damaged beyond repair) 26 April 1942. The pilot reported a problem just after take off. Crashed after stalling on approach 06.00 at RAF Coleby Grange, Lincolnshire. One of a formation on mock invasion exercises. Pilot recovered from the wrecked aircraft alive, but died in Bracebridge Hospital, Lincolnshire at 19:00 hrs the same day from injuries sustained, without ever regaining consciousness.

RAF Coleby Grange was a Royal Air Force satellite station situated alongside the western edge of the A15 on open heathland between the villages of Coleby and Nocton Heath and lying 7.4 miles (11.9 km) due south of the county town Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England. 288 Squadron formed at RAF Digby on 17 November 1941 and was equipped with Lysanders, Blenheims and Hurricanes to provide practice for the anti-aircraft defences in Lincolnshire and Yorkshire by towing targets and conducting simulated attacks. Defiants were used between March 1942 and April 1943.
