Narrative:Hawker Tempest Mk. II PR616, 5 Squadron RAF: Written off (damaged beyond repair) 14 March 1946. An air pipe in the pneumatic system failed, and all air pressure was lost, including the air pressure to the braking system. On touchdown at RAF Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India, the pilot - Warrant Officer R. Shanks - had no means of stopping the aircraft/ as a result, the Hawker Tempest ran off the port side of the runway, then struck a ditch approx. 50 yards beyond the runway edge, the impact of which broke off the undercarriage.
