(Two days after "V-E Day" on 8.5.45, which marked the end of WW2 in Europe; the 8th and 9th of May 1945 were marked as official holidays). Both crew - Flight Sergeant J R Taylor (AUS.433630) and Sgt D R Louden (1570270) survived uninjured. Flt Sgt Taylor was subsequently charged with unauthorised low flying and tried by Court Martial. On 7.6.45 he was found guilty, reduced to the ranks and sentenced to 56 days’ detention.

Identity used for rebuild of Tiger Moth airframe, assembled by C F Strecker from UK components (although the connection to Tiger Moth DF116 - if any - is unclear). Civil registered in South Africa as ZS-OCS 28.7.97 to Moth Vintage Aircraft Co, Rand. Re-registered 9.9.99 to King Air Trust, Cresta. Sold to Ray Gleimius, based on farm near Bloemfontein (owner killed 11.2006 in crash in Drakensberg Mountains). Sold [early 2007] to Andre Bradshaw (at Bloemfontein auction)

Written off (destroyed) 19.12.2007 at a fatal crash near Bethleham, Free State, According to the South African CAA report into the incident (see link #1 for the full report):

"The pilot departed from Bethlehem on a private flight in daylight and fine weather conditions to Nottingham Road Aerodrome in Kwa-Zulu Natal. As the pilot turned onto the crosswind leg after take-off, still in the climb, he allowed the aircraft to stall and entered a spin manoeuvre from which he was unable to recover. The aircraft crashed next to the aerodrome.

The pilot sustained fatal injuries. The aircraft sustained extensive fire damage during the accident sequence. Investigation did not reveal any mechanical failure on any of the primary flight control systems or any evidence of structural failure elsewhere in the aircraft structure, nor any evidence of engine malfunction due to mechanical reasons prior to the accident.

=Probable Cause=
The pilot applied poor take-off technique, causing the aircraft to stall and enter a spin manoeuvre from which the he was unable to recover."

A student pilot recorded the entire event on videocam. Bethlehem is a city in the eastern Free State province of South Africa that is situated on the Liebenbergs river along a fertile valley just north of the Rooiberg Mountains on the N5 road
