Narrative:
Crashed and destroyed by fire 18/8/1973 on take-off from Saltby, 8 miles north-east of Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, whilst glider-towing. The aircraft "snagged" a glider-towing cable which had been left on the runway. This cable wrapped itself around the undercarriage, and brought the aircraft down suddenly from an altitude of approximately 70 feet. Both persons on board (pilot and passenger) were killed in the crash and subsequent fire. The official AAIB report names the pilot killed as Mr. M.S.Dawson, but does not name the passenger fatality, other than to state that he was a three year old child, who was the son of the pilot

When he saw the towing aircraft (G-ATMS) diving towards the ground, the pilot of the glider under tow released his glider from the tow rope, and landed safely, uninjured, in a nearby field to the right of the runway at Saltby.

Registration G-ATMS cancelled by the UK Civil Aviation Authority as "aircraft destroyed" 21/8/1973
