Taylorcraft Auster AOP.V TJ324/"BD-R", LAS (Light Aircraft School) RAF: Written off (damaged beyond repair) 23/7/1953 when the rear fuselage was struck by Boulton Paul Balliol WG180 of 288 Squadron, RAF while taxiing at RAF Middle Wallop, near Andover, Hampshire. According to the book "The Boulton Paul Balliol: The Last Merlin-Powered Aircraft By Alec Brew"...

"On 23 July 1953, WG180's propellor chewed up Auster TJ324's entire rear fuselage in a taxiing collision - as far as the pilots seat! It must have been an alarming experience for the Auster pilot, who got away with just an injured shoulder, although his pilots seat was heavily damaged".

Crew of Auster TJ324:
Captain G H Southall, RAF - uninjured
Lieutenant K A Kerrigan, RAF - slightly injured (shoulder injury)

Balliol WG180 survived to be repaired and returned to service. According to that aircraft''s record card: "to 19 MU RAF St. Athan 9/12/1959. Declared NEA (Non-Effective Airframe) 30/3/1960. Struck Off Charge 9/1/1961 as Cat.5(s) and sold for scrap to H H Bushell & Co Ltd., Birmingham.
