Narrative:de Havilland DH-82a Tiger Moth MSN DHA.459 (Gipsy Major #242); built by DH Australia at Bansktown, Sydney, NSW. Supplied to Vrijwillig Vlieger Corps (VVC) in Netherlands East Indies in July/August 1941 and regd PK-VVT (C of R 89) in 9.41 to VVC. Delivered to the Navy VVC at Surabaya and was to be equipped with Edo floats. The floats were not delivered and the Tiger Moth was evacuated 18.2.42 on the s.s "Tjinegara" from Surabaya, arriving at Adelaide, Australia 19.2.42. Registration PK-VVT cancelled 1.3.42.
Taken on charge by the RAAF as A17-624 at 1 EFTS Parafield 7.3.42. To Victorian & Interstate Airways, Essendon 24.1.44 for overhaul; to 1 Aircraft Depot, Laverton 18.7.44. To 5 Aircraft Depot, Wagga Wagga, NSW 20.7.44. To 11 EFTS Benalla 4.8.44 for storage. To 3 Air Observers School, Port Pirie 28.9.44. To 6 SFTS Mallala 3.1.45 for storage; transferred to Care & Maintenance Unit 31.12.45. To 1 FTS Point Cook 11.2.46 for storage. To Care & Maintenance Unit Bairnsdale 1.3.46; put up for sale 11.7.47.
Struck off charge when sold 12.1.48 for £150 to F D Talent, Berwick, Victoria; issued 4.5.48. Australian civil Registered VH-AMH (C of R 1809) 26.7.51 to T Moriarty & L Young, Shepparton, Victoria. Re-registered 22.2.52 to Shepparton Aviation Co, Shepparton, Victoria. Re-registered 2.11.58 to EM & B North, t/a North Bros, Shepparton, Victoria. Re-registered 22.5.59 to RM Fisher, Corryong, Victoria. Re-registered 1.3.60 to Neil M McInnes, t/a Farmair, Gippsland, Victoria.
Badly damaged when struck fence on landing near Rosedale, Victoria 22.11.61. Withdrawn from use and registration VH-AMH cancelled 31.1.65. Rebuilt by Peter Williams and registered as VH-TIG 10.4.68 to Peter A Williams & H R Murphy, South Yarra (aircraft based at Essendon, Victoria; later Goulburn, NSW). Substantailly damaged when undercarriage collapsed on landing at Berwick Airport, Casey Field, Berwick, Victoria 5.1.70; according to the ATSB report into the accident:
"The aircraft had been re-built during April 1968 and a maintenance release inspection had been carried out on 30th August 1969. The aircraft had flown 129 hours since the re-building and had done 140 landings. At the time of the accident it had flown some 35 hours since the issue of the maintenance release. The aircraft was engaged in a period of circuits and landings and after touching down on the fourth landing, the pilot-in-command took over the controls in order to demonstrate crosswind technique. He applied full engine power for a go-around and at a speed of about 40 knots the starboard undercarriage leg collapsed, the nose of the aircraft dropped and it slewed to the right. The aircraft came to rest on its nose and starboard wing heading some 90 degrees to the right of the intended take-off path.
The undercarriage had collapsed because of the fatigue failure of the lug of the eye bolt supporting the upper end of the starboard radius rod. Examination showed that the pivot bolt and probably the eye bolt itself had been tightened to an extent which prevented the pivotal movement of these components and an abnormal load would therefore have been imposed on the eye bolt lug during ground operation of the aircraft".
Repaired and returned to service. Registered 27.4.72 to L K Hatfield, Park Orchards, Victoria (and painted in RAAF colours as A17-624). Withdrawn from use at Berwick Airport, Casey Field, Berwick, Victoria and registration cancelled 14.2.78. Registration restored 9.3.79 to same owner. Re-registered 20.3.80 to G Venier, I G Barnes, G E Bocking, A Elliott, J H McCurley, R J Stamm & John Walter Zyla, trustees of the Goulburn Tiger Club, Goulburn, NSW. Registered 11.2.86 to John Walter Zyla, Goulburn, NSW. Currently registered.
NOTE: Some published sources quote the MSN as DHA.466 (Gipsy Major #263): That Tiger Moth was also supplied to Vrijwillig Vlieger Corps (VVC) in Netherlands East Indies in July/August 1941 and regd in the PK-VVA to PK-VWX series.
