This was the first Lancaster to be lost. Crash-landed after pilot misread the airfield's wind sock. Realising his error, Flt/Sgt Nicholson tried to turn onto the cross runway, but lost control & ran into bank of hard frozen snow. Undercarriage collapsed and damaged beyond repair. Aircraft has only flown for a total of six hours
Crew:Presumed to have a full crew of eight, but one only named so far - Pilot:Flt/Sgt D.F. Nicholson OK. No fatalities reported, other seven crew also presumed OK
