The pilot took off from La Nouvelle, in the Mafate cirque on Reunion Island (974), bound for Grand Place, also in the Mafate cirque, a distance of around four kilometers.
On landing, the right skid dug into the ground and struck a rock, causing the helicopter to roll over.
The pilot reported that rapid action to lower the overall pitch would probably have prevented the helicopter from reaching the critical angle and tipping over. He indicated that he did not have the time to take this action.
