The aircraft crashed in the hills north of Troutbeck, between Keswick and Penrith in Cumbria. The pilot and owner received fatal injuries and the aircraft was destroyed. According to a statement/press release from Cumbria Fire & Rescue:

"At 14:48 hours on 11th October 2020, three fire engines and the water bowser and supporting fire engine were mobilised to the Troutbeck area following reports of a light aircraft crash. Fire crews assisted ambulance and police and remained at the scene for around two hours".

Michael Clusker, station manager for Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, said: "We were mobilised and sent our assets down to the airfield where the incident was and assisted other agencies in making the scene safe."

In total, two fire crews from Penrith and one crew from Keswick were sent to the scene. An air ambulance was also in attendance.

"We checked over the wreckage to make sure it was safe. Then it became a police scene and they handed it over to air traffic investigators," said Mr Clusker.

Eye-witnesses were said to have seen what happened and an investigation has been launched by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch.

"We have sent a team to the site of an accident involving a light aircraft near Troutbeck Airfield in Cumbria. An investigation has been launched," said a spokesperson.

His widow and contemporary media reports (see link #5) named the pilot fatality as "David Bolton, 44 from Nottingham, who was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash north of Troutbeck, between Keswick and Penrith on Sunday".

Mr Draper's wife Alison Bolton said in a statement: 'David Bolton, a father-of-two from Nottingham was tragically killed yesterday after an accident in his light aircraft at Troutbeck, Cumbria. The chief revenue officer for tech firm Draper & Dash was a devoted husband, a fantastic father, a loving son and a loyal brother and friend with an appetite for life.

'He made a huge impact on everyone he met, whether in his work in healthcare around the world or his personal life and will be truly missed by so many. His family have asked for privacy at this difficult time.'

Photos of the crashed Cessna in the Daily Mail report (see link #15) show that the aircraft was inverted when it came to a stop, but largely intact.
