A Piper Cub J3C-65 was conducting a flight under visual flight rules (VFR) in the Lac Edouard region located in Mauricie, Quebec with one pilot and one passenger on board. During take-off, while in the southern section of the lake, a loss of lift occurred due to changing winds and the aircraft struck trees. The pilot was seriously injured and the passenger was fatally injured. The emergency locator transmitter (ELT) activated. The aircraft sustained substantial damage.
