Narrative:
On the morning of 25 February 2022, a Sukhoi Su-27P (bort 100 Blue s/n 36911035716) of the 831st Tactical Aviation Brigade was shot down likely by forces of the Russian Federation in the vicinity of the residential suburb of Osokorky, Darnytskyi Raion, Kyiv. A large fireball of the aircraft wreckage could be seen falling over the suburb, with various pieces of wreckage landing in the residential streets below (seen from the viewpoint of Mykoly Bazhana Avenue, looking South).

In March 2022, the website "Military Watch Magazine" claimed that the aircraft had been downed by a Russian S-400 air defence system operating in Belarus at a range of approximately 150km. However, this information has not been reported by official Russian sources such as the Russian Ministry of Defence or TASS.

The aircraft had been piloted by 53 year old pilot Polkovnik Oleksandr Yakovych Oksanchenko. While he had retired in 2018, Oksanchenko returned to serve in 2022. Oksanchenko joined the Soviet Air Force in 1989, rising to the position of deputy commander of the 831st Tactical Aviation Brigade, seeing combat during the Crimean and Donbass crises. From 2013 to 2018, Oksanchenko had also been an Su-27 display pilot for the Ukrainian Air Force.

Polkovnik Oksanchenko was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine (Order of the Gold Star). In Late August 2023, the loss of the pilot and aircraft were acknowledged on the official Facebook page of the 831st Tactical Aviation Brigade of the Ukrainian Air Force, with a "piano burning" ceremony taking place. Historically, this has been a tradition practiced by the British Royal Air Force.
