Narrative:McDonnell F4H-1 (F-4B-18-MC) Phantom II, Bu No 151470/'AC-111', VF-31, US Navy: Written off (destroyed) January 20 1965. Starboard engine failed during catapult shot from US Saratoga (CV-60), Mediterranean Sea, off coast of Spain. Both crew Lt(jg) C. Brokaw (pilot) and Lt. V. L. Knaus (RIO) ejected safely and were recovered.
After an extensive shipyard period in the second half of 1964, Saratoga departed for the Mediterranean, arriving just before Christmas 1964. Ports visited over the next 6 months were Naples, Athens, Cannes, Valencia, Spain, Istanbul, and Malta.
