The Sonaca 201's nose landing gear collapsed during a bounced landing.
On short final, a gust of wind destabilised the aircraft's trajectory. The student pilot corrected the gust by returning the aircraft to the runway centreline. However, the trajectory passed below the glide path. The flare led to an initial bounce on the runway. It is likely that actions similar to those described in the Mermoz Academy operations manual caused a second bounce with a higher load factor. The final contact with the runway took place with a flat or slightly negative attitude.
Contributing factors:
The following factors may have contributed to the bounced landing and the failure of the nose landing gear:
- a lack of go-around when the trajectory was destabilised at low altitude, which can be explained by the student pilot's lack of experience;
- management of the flare made tricky due to destabilisation at low level by a gust.
