Narrative:
On April 8, 2023, about 1937 mountain daylight time, a Van’s RV-7, N17NK, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Morgan, Utah. The pilot was not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight.

The pilot reported that he had performed a conditional inspection on the engine which revealed particles in the engine oil screen. After he consulted a mechanic, the pilot decided to continue flying and monitor the engine.

On the day of the accident the pilot decided to perform a short local flight. About 15 minutes into the flight, he noticed a burning odor when the heater was activated. He then experienced a vibration as he attempted to return to the departure airport. Approximately one minute later, the pilot encountered a sudden shudder, then observed oil covering the windshield. The engine subsequently lost power.

The pilot broadcasted over the radio that he was making a forced landing near Morgan County Airport and landed south of the field. The pilot had no forward visibility due to the oil film obstructing the windscreen. The airplane landed in a field, flipped over, and came to rest inverted after the main landing gear contacted snow.
