Narrative:De Havilland Vampire F.Mk.3, VT870, 27 MU RAF Shawbury, Shropshire: Delivered to the RAF 15-3-1948 to 27 MU RAF Shawbury. Written off (damaged beyond repair) 29-7-48 in a take-off accident at RAF Shawbury, Shropshire.
During the take-off run, the pilot raised the undercarriage prematurely and the aircraft sank back onto the runway at RAF Shawbury. As a result, the Vampire skidded along the runway at RAF Shawbury on its belly for 300 yards. The sparks generated by the friction from this even started a fire, and the aircraft was written off as "destroyed by fire"
