The pilot took off from a private helipad for flights lasting around three minutes, during which he spraid shade paint on a six-metre-high tunnel greenhouse.
The helicopter hit a power line. The rear section of the helicopter, including the tail rotor, separated from the rest of the helicopter, which continued forward for approximately 150 m before colliding with the ground.
Contributing factors
The following factors may have contributed to the collision with the power line:
- the lack of reconnaissance prior to spraying paint on the greenhouse, which did not allow the pilot to adapt his flight paths on the basis of an identification or recollection of the hazards present in the vicinity of the work site (obstacles and power lines for example, but also the position of the sun) ;
- relative confidence, which can be explained by the pilot's experience of low-level flying and by the routine that may have developed as a result of the repetitiveness and brevity of each rotation.
