Narrative:
The pilot of the glider, an ASK 21, wanted to be towed to 1300 meters above Kufstein-Langkampfen airfield (LOIK) to perform aerobatics with a familiar teenager as a passenger. Cumulonimbus clouds were present above the Hausberg Pendling and the city of Kufstein. It was raining. The tow plane pilot refueled with an additional 30 liters before takeoff. The pilot sitting in the front of the glider reported "Cable taut" before taxiing at 15:04:15, and there was no further radio communication. After the tow plane took off from runway 06, it maneuvered to avoid a farmhouse located in the extension of the runway. At 15:04:55, the tow plane reached its highest altitude above the airfield level of approximately 45 meters. Immediately after, a high-voltage power line was crossed twice. At 15:05:22, during a right turn, the tow plane's left wingtip struck a tree, approximately 40 meters high (measured above road level), whose top extended beyond a wooded slope. The contact point was located just west of the L211 state road and approximately 28 meters above the road level. The left wing was torn off, with a portion of the wing remaining lodged in the tree. The glider pilot observed the tow plane touching the treetop, immediately released the tow rope, turned right and descended, performing an emergency landing in the middle of the valley. The pilot and the glider passenger remained uninjured. The glider remained undamaged. The fuselage of the DR400, along with the right wing still attached to the aircraft, continued to fall approximately 80 meters further and 26 meters lower. The right wing's folding section was detached just before the final impact with the ground when it made contact with a birch tree. The fuselage, with the propeller still spinning, struck an embankment and came to rest at 15:05:25 in the entrance of a farm. The farmer heard the impact and alerted emergency services. The pilot, who was strapped into his seat, was ejected from the aircraft and critically injured. After initial medical treatment, the pilot was transported to Innsbruck Hospital, where he passed away on the same day.
