Narrative:On August 26, 2023, about 1738 eastern daylight time, a Nanchang China CJ-6A, N114DZ, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Merrickville, New York. The airline transport pilot and a pilot-rated passenger were seriously injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight.
The airplane departed Dewitt Field/Old Town Municipal Airport (OLD), Old Town, Maine about 1518, destined for University Park Airport (UNV), State College, Pennsylvania. The pilot reported that both wing fuel tanks were full prior to departure with 62 gallons of 100-low lead aviation fuel. He reported that while en route he realized that the airplane would not have the required fuel reserves to continue to UNV, due to weather deviations along the route of flight, and he notified air traffic control of his intention to divert to Greater Binghamton Airport (BGM), Binghamton, New York. About 40 miles from BGM, the pilot reported the airplane experiencing an “engine failure.” He subsequently complied with the engine failure in flight emergency procedure but was unable to restore engine power. While the pilot attempted to troubleshoot the engine, he asked the commercial pilot-rated passenger to declare an emergency with air traffic control, who provided the pilot a vector to a nearby airport. The airplane was unable to glide to that airport and impacted trees, substantially damaging both wings and the empennage.
Examination of the wreckage by a Federal Aviation Administration inspector revealed that the landing gear and flaps were in the retracted position. The fuselage remained intact with impact damage to the nose of the airplane. Both wings were impact damaged and remained attached to the fuselage. A smell consistent with aviation fuel was noted at the accident site. The right wing fuel tank was breached. The left wing fuel tank was intact and did not contain any fuel when visually checked. Both ailerons remained attached to their respective wings. The empennage remained attached to the fuselage and exhibited impact damage. The rudder remained attached to the vertical stabilizer. The right elevator and about half of the left elevator remained attached to the horizontal stabilizer.
Fuel receipts showed that the pilot purchased 28.9 gallons of 100-low lead aviation fuel on August 24, 2023. The pilot reported that at the time of the loss of engine power the airplane contained about 1 hour of fuel remaining.
The wreckage was retained for further examination.
