F-16C 88-0488 (call sign GOLD 41) of the 421st FS, 388th FW, USAF was written off 20 September 1994 when it crashed at about 11:03 hours in a cornfield 1 nautical mile from Hooper, near Ogden, Weber County, Utah. The aircraft was on a training mission on the Utah Test and Training Range.
F-16CG aircraft S/N 88-0488 crashed and was destroyed at 11:03 MDT. The aircraft impacted a marshy area, bounced in the air travelling approximately 850 feet before crashing in a harvested field. The crash site was in Davis County Utah, 1 NM from Hooper UT, and 283 degrees true bearing and 8 NM from Hill AFB, UT.
The marshy wetlands area where the aircraft initially impacted is owned by the Stone family and the harvested field where the bulk of the aircraft landed is owned by the partnership of HL Parker Farms. The external fuel tanks that were jettisoned landed on high desert land owned by Basin Land and Livestock Company at 41'22.29" north latitude, 113'12.44" west longitude. There was no apparent damage to this property.
The pilot, Captain Michael D. Goldfein, safely ejected and landed in the Great Salt Lake. He was rescued by a UH-1 from Hill’s 545th Test Group and released from hospital after examination. A faulty fan blade in the engine was deemed to be the cause of the crash.
(During Operation "Desert Storm" F-16C, 88-0488, when with the 4th TFS, at Hill AFB Utah was hit by a SA-3 SAM on 21 January 1991, which exploded behind his tailpipe peppering the aircraft with shrapnel. Sustained battle damage to the bottom of the intake. Repaired by SABCA in Belgium and returned to the United States on 22 January, 1992).
