Narrative:
The aircraft, soon after takeoff, suffered a partial loss of engine power. The pilot returned to the farm strip from which he had taken off, and attempted to land. However, the approach was made with a tailwind and the aircraft was too fast to land before the end of the runway. The pilot attempted a go-around but there was not sufficient engine power available; the aircraft descended and landed in a field just beyond the end of the runway. The aircraft struck a large oak tree, the passenger-side harness mounting was disrupted and the passenger was fatally injured.

The AAIB investigation found that the main fuel jet of the right carburettor had become obstructed by a corrosion fragment liberated from the carburettor bowl. The failure of the passenger's restraint was found to be due to the failure of the bond between the shoulder harness attachment fitting and the inner surface of the fuselage, to which it was secured.

Contemporary news reports (see links #3, #4, and #6) named the two on board as "Danielle Rippon, 66, of Smarden, and her husband, Max, 76". Max (George Maxwell) Rippon was the pilot and owner of F-PYMD, and survived; the fatality was his wife and passenger, Danielle Rippon. Coroner Rachel Redman told Mr Rippon, who was injured in the crash, there was nothing he could have done to avoid it. Addressing him and and his two children Isabelle, 45 and Bruce, 41, she said: "I believe that there is nothing you could have done to avoid the crash. "It is a terrible fluke that the aircraft hit that single oak tree." Pathologist Graham Maidment said Mrs Rippon suffered fatal multiple injuries including a severe head injury. He said the harness she was wearing did not remain intact, but he believed that if it had remained intact, the injuries she sustained would have been no greater than her husband's.

Nature of Damage sustained to airframe: Per the AAIB report "Aircraft destroyed".
