Narrative:
The aircraft was at CFB Summerside to participate in the Armed Forces Day open-house. Flying displays were cancelled due to poor weather so the CF18 was put on static display with the pilot in attendance. After the close of Armed Forces Day activities, the pilot completed normal preparations for the return flight to CFB Bagotville. The weather for departure was a cloud base at 300 ft generally topped at 4500 ft and visibility of 6 miles. The aircraft took off using afterburner and climbed steeply into the cloud. Less than a minute later, the aircraft crashed into shallow water 200 yards offshore in Malpeque Bay.
The Maintenance Signal Data Recording System (MSDRS) tape was found after four days of underwater search. Although the MSDRS is not a true Flight Data Recorder, some flight data can be obtained from it. In this case, 45 seconds of data were recorded because the pilot pressed the "Record" button at the start of the takeoff roll. The last five seconds of data is always retained in the mission computer memories; however, these were too badly damaged to yield any information. No data is available for the last 6 seconds prior to impact.
Insufficient evidence exists to identify a specific cause with certainty. Possible cause factors are failure of the attitude reference, pilot disorientation and pilot incapacitation. Lab analysis is still incomplete and may alter the likelihood of these possible causes.
